This article is an overview of the series, its events and characters. Earthian is a 1988 Fantasy / Romance manga series created by Yun Kouga. It was initially published in the Shinshokan Wings magazine. The series was later adapted into a 4-episode Original Version Animation (OVA) by the J.C.Staff animation studio. Earthian documents the endeavours of a black angel named Chihaya, as he interacts with the inhabitants of the earth and tries desperately to convince his people they are not all bad.

Earthian (アーシアン) is a 1989-1996 anime OAV series based on the manga by Yun Kouga. It was published and serialized in Shinshokan's Wing's magazine from 1988 to 1994 with a total of 4 volumes. The OVA consisted of 4 45 minute episodes. It was animated by J.C.Staff. It was also directed by Kenichi Ōnuki, Nobuyasu Furukawa, and Toshiyasu Kogawa. Despite some glaring problems, I found Earthian to be a thoughtful, intelligent, tragic show that I enjoyed much more than I expected.
There are very few shows that I find unexpectedly captivating. I had no real expectation for Earthian when I popped it in my DVD player, since I'd seen so little press on it. What I found was a thoroughly different anime, one with developed characters and a unique backdrop that completely enthralled me. At the same time, it was infuriating in its assumptions that the viewer knew the basic story from the manga series, skipping around with a reckless disregard for continuity between episodes and throwing in side characters with nary a second glance. Despite some glaring problems, I found Earthian to be a thoughtful, intelligent, tragic show that I enjoyed much more than I expected.

Chihaya and Kagetsuya, two polar-opposite angels from the planet Eden, travel to Earth to track the positive and negative actions of its inhabitants, Earthians.
