Eleceed Review: 'Opposites Attract' Webtoon Worth The Read? - Animevania (2024)

Say it with me folks: We are absolute suckers for a good ‘Opposites Attract’ trope. Like, that was my entire pull when trying out a new webtoon on the rise, Eleceed. I took one look at the summary and saw that it had cats, action, and two characters that didn’t get along. Say no more fam, I knew I was in for a good time. I mean, I’ve been vocal about how much I adore good enemies-to-lovers, and Eleceed looked promising.

Turns out, I was right on the money because Eleceed is most definitely worth the read. And with 201 Million views on the Line WebToon app, it seems like I’m not the only one who thinks so. Eleceed is a joint effort between Son Je-Ho and Zhena. Je-Ho also happens to be the writer for one of the biggest webtoon hits of all time, Noblesse. And Zhena has illustrated works such as Girl’s In The Wild, Nineteen, etc.

I remember when Noblesse came out, and people adored it for its fantastical setting with enough violence to put some Shonen manga to shame. It’s just the kind of thing that gets you interested in the ridiculous fight scenes, often involving teenagers that were always erring on the side of sadism. It’s just pure, unadulterated fun, and Eleceed looks like it’s on the same track.

With fleshed-out characters that have insane chemistry, in a premise that is both familiar and not, Eleceed is doing something right. It’s just the kind of read you pick up when you’re bored and get hooked on almost instantly. But if you want more convincing to see if this is the webtoon you’re missing out on, then keep on reading!

The Premise: Super Powered Kid Meets Secret Agent Cat?

Jiwoo Seo has super speed and yet, he never uses it for mischief. Instead, he’s the kindest soul you’ll ever meet, using his gifts to try and make this world a better place. Whether it’s a little kid that requires his help or a pet that needs rescuing, Jiwoo is on the case.

But it can be a lonely life, hiding away in fear of ostracization. So, he never really branches out. Unable to make friends, he lives a solitary existence, with only the stray cats he feeds as his company. Until he stumbles on a particularly chubby, injured one.

Kayden, on the other hand, is a secret agent who is hiding under a disguise until the heat dies down. He’s egotistical, part of a group of superpowered individuals known as the “Awakened“. And now, he’s stuck being a fat cat in Jiwoo’s care.

The two now have to navigate a dangerous world, fighting an evil that threatens everything they know. And they’ll get to that, once they can stop getting on each other’s nerves.

The Breakdown: Beautiful Art, Great Action, And Well-Timed Comedy!

I know that it’s sort of typical for someone to gravitate toward a webtoon for the art alone, but that’s what happened to me. Eleceed’s art is genuinely gorgeous, it pulls you in with promises of a visual treat. But then the plot itself delivers the punch that elevates everything.

And the premise is chaotic, and fun in the best of ways. The setting itself is something we’ve seen before, where superpowered individuals are a rare breed and there is a secret antagonistic force waiting to take over the world. But what kicks it up a notch are the characters themselves. I already love how Jiwoo and Kayden play off of each other, and their cuteness is offset by how serious they can get when the occasion calls for it. They are just extremely likable, with their dynamic selling the story.

What’s surprising is how balanced everything is in Eleceed. The story involves some great fighting scenes, heavy moments, and high stakes. But there’s some enjoyable comedy here as well, to lighten things up. Like, I’m genuinely wheezing at some points, and that’s why it’s such an immersive read.

The Verdict: Eleceed Mixes The Supernatural Thrill With Fluff!

At its heart, Eleceed is a story about two people that are complete opposites putting their differences aside for the greater good. It’s cute and gets you invested heavily in the characters. There’s very little not to love here which is why Eleceed gets my highest seal of approval.

If you’re looking for something exciting, look no further than Eleceed!
